Classification of psychological types of sexual partners by Sergei Liebig (1982) 

from the book “Functional female sexopathology” (1)

For practical purposes of psychoprophylaxis and psychotherapy of sexual disharmonies, we (S.S. Liebig) proposed the following working classification of psychological types of sexual partners.

Male Types

"Man-father." An older man, psychologically needing a woman to admire him, would be significantly younger, physically weaker, and inexperienced. His sex drive may be low (or diminished), but his skill in courting women allows him to charm some women, and during sexual intercourse, to satisfy them through good preparation and the use of varied and carefully chosen caresses, despite his low potency.

"Man-Man." Two types can be distinguished here: 
a) the active (aggressive) type. A young or middle-aged man with good physical fitness, assertive, somewhat rough, does not differentiate caresses much, but delivering them intensively. During sexual intercourse, he favors prolonged periods of friction and is sometimes prone to causing pain and emotional suffering on the woman. 
b) the passive (needing a woman's aggressiveness). A young or middle-aged man who "idolises a woman," considers himself unworthy of her, guilty, craves her punishment and even contempt. He prefers women tendencies in sexual life.

Carl Jung distinguished eight basic psychological types, based on their main (dominant) function: Se-type, Si-type, Fe, Fi-type, Te-type, Ti-type, Ne-type, Ni-type. Let us consider the relationships between Jung's types based on the socionic model.

• Relationships of duality (or dual relationships) are considered best for long-term relationships in a couple. These are the relationships between the types: Se + Ni, Si + Ne, Fe + Ti, Fi + Te.

Dualization is complete if the auxiliary functions of the types are opposite. For example, Se type with auxiliary Ti + Ni type with auxiliary Fe (SeTi + NiFe), or Se type with auxiliary Fi + Ni type with auxiliary Te (SeFi + NiTe). In such a couple, the anima/animus of one partner is identical to the main (dominant) function of the other partner. (More information about the anima/animus as a function here >>>) This contributes to the psychological harmonization of each partner. The partners can spend a lot of time together and get tired of each other. Such relationships can last a lifetime.

Conditions for Dualization
The success of a relationship largely depends on the level of harmony of the partners. Dualization is possible if the partners have similar level of harmony (more about the levels of harmony here >>>). If the partners' levels differ significantly, dualization will not occur. For example, if one partner is at the level of social role and the other is at the level of manipulation, there will be no resonance between them, since the partner at the social role level will act constructively (win-win), while the other partner, at the manipulation level, will act destructively (win-lose).

If the auxiliary functions of the types are the same, the relationship is called semi-duality and has a different nature. For example, Se-type with auxiliary Ti-function +  Ni type with auxiliary Te (SeTi + NiTe), or Se type with auxiliary Fi + Ni type with auxiliary Fe (SeFi + NiFe).

With a thorough study of typology, it becomes obvious that we develop different relationships with different types of people: it is easy for us to get along with representatives of some types, but difficult with representatives of others.

Carl Jung wrote that the difference between types can cause misunderstandings between people: “The conscious attitude (main psychical function) is always in the nature of a Weltanschauung, if it is not explicitly a religion. It is this that makes the type problem so important. The opposition between the types is not merely an external conflict between men, it is the source of endless inner conflicts; the cause not only of external disputes and dislikes, but of nervous ills and psychic suffering.” (1)

When it comes to relationships in a couple between a man and a woman, the concept of anima/animus immediately comes to mind. In Jung's typology, anima/animus refer to a function that is opposite to the main function of the type and at the same time complements it. Anima/animus in typology are identical to the inferior function. (More about this here >>>) If the main function is extraverted, the anima or animus is introverted; if the main function is Sensation (S), the anima/animus is Intuition (N); if the main function is Thinking (T), the anima/animus is Feeling (F). Thus, we have the following pairs of functions: Se – Ni, Si – Ne, Fe – Ti, Fi – Te.
One can assume that the relationship between types whose main function corresponds to the partner's anima/animus should be special.

Here is what Carl Jung writes about the relationship between the types Se – Ni, Si – Ne, Fe – Ti, Fi – Te : “This dependence on the object seems to the introvert a mark of the greatest inferiority, while to the extravert the preoccupation with the subject seems nothing but infantile auto-eroticism. So it is not surprising that the two types often come into conflict. This does not, however, prevent most men from marrying women of the opposite type. Such marriages are very valuable as psychological symbioses” (1)

Jung’s close associate Marie-Louise von Franz said: “In marriage, as Jung points out, one tends to marry the opposite type ... That is one of the great blessings and sources of happiness in the early stages of a marriage; suddenly the whole weight of the inferior function is gone, one lives in a blessed oneness with the other, and every problem is solved!” (2)

In his work, Psychological Types, Carl Jung described eight distinct personality types. He proposed the concept of four main psychic functions: Sensation, Feeling, Thinking and Intuition. (More on this here >>>) Each of these functions has two variants: extraverted and introverted, and together there are eight psychic functions, 4 introverted and 4 extraverted:
• Sensation Extraverted - Se, • Sensation Introverted – Si
• Feeling Extraverted - Fe, • Feeling Introverted – Fi
• Thinking Extraverted - Te, • Thinking Introverted - Ti
• Intuition Extraverted – Ne, • Intuition Introverted – Ni

All eight functions are present in the psyche of each person, however, one of the functions always surpasses the others in strength and speed of reaction. It is called the main or superior one. If the main function is Sensation Extraverted (Se), then the type is called Sensing Extraverted, if the main function is Feeling Introverted (Fi), then the type is called Feeling Introverted, etc.

Duality of the psyche. Jung discovered that the human psyche has a dual nature, the main function of a type is always balanced by an opposite psychic function. Jung called this complementarity of opposite functions COMPENSATION.

“Compensation means a balancing or supplementing… Whereas Adler restricts his concept of compensation to a mere balancing of the feeling of inferiority, I conceive it as a general functional adjustment, an inherent self-regulation of the psychic apparatus. In this sense, I regard the activity of the unconscious as a compensation to the onesidedness of the general attitude produced by the function of consciousness (main function) … Compensation by the unconscious is, as a rule, not so much a contrast as a levelling up or supplementing of the conscious orientation.” – from ‘Psychological Types’ (1)
